PRACTICAL GUIDE · STEEL STRUCTURES

What are the stages of a steel fabrication project?

A clear sequence helps clients understand what needs to be decided before steel is fabricated. The exact stages and responsibilities vary by project, drawings, approvals, and the scope agreed with the metal fabricator.

1. Define the project brief

Describe the intended use, dimensions, site, clearances, doors, equipment, and target timing. Drawings, sketches, site plans, and reference photos help turn an idea into information the team can review.

Separate confirmed requirements from estimates and open decisions. This helps the team identify what is ready to scope and what needs more information.

2. Review scope and design responsibilities

Discuss which work is requested: engineering and drawings, fabrication, surface treatment, delivery, installation, or a defined subset. Agree who supplies project information, approvals, materials, lifting or access provisions, and any third-party equipment.

Design calculations, applicable standards, submittals, inspections, and approvals must be assigned to the responsible project professionals and confirmed for the location and contract.

3. Confirm drawings and fabrication details

Before fabrication, the relevant dimensions, materials, connections, openings, interfaces, and revisions need to be sufficiently defined and reviewed for the agreed scope. Changes after approval can affect material, coordination, schedule, and cost.

For steel structures, connection details, tolerances, and erection considerations should be coordinated with the design and fabrication teams.

4. Fabricate, deliver, and install when included

Fabrication and preparation follow the approved project information and agreed quality requirements. Delivery planning depends on piece sizes, transport route, site access, lifting, storage, and the installation sequence.

On-site installation is included only where it forms part of the agreed scope. Site readiness, access, foundations, equipment, safety arrangements, and inspection responsibilities should be clarified before work begins.

5. Keep communication and records clear

Use agreed drawing revisions, document decisions and changes, and identify who can approve them. Clear communication helps keep fabrication information, site conditions, and delivery plans aligned.
